What was your experience of depression?
I experienced depression and anxiety during my final years of school. I was closely involved in my community which wasn’t the commonly accepted thing amongst young people. Due to this, I was bullied at school and I began to withdraw from people I love and activities I enjoy. With support from a close friend and a couple of people in my community I was able to move on and be okay with who I am. Coming from a small country town, it was a challenge to know where to go and who to speak to.
What do you think young people need to know about keeping mentally healthy?
Keeping mentally healthy is as important as keeping physically healthy. Living in a world with the internet, there is help such as the Youthbeyondblue website, or other youth mental health organisations which allow you to find advice and remain anonymous. But if times get tough - it is important to talk to someone and then seek help together.
What does the National Youth Week theme ‘Live it Now!’ mean to you?
This year’s National Youth Week theme reminds me that I am young and we need to live life now, and live it loud! We have so many opportunities out there and we need to jump right in and grab them!
What’s the best thing about being a young person?
Having a whole life in front of us to explore.
