Carers Australia has announced the Young Carers Online Competition. Entry is open to all young people under the age of 26, who are a young carer or who have been a young carer (have supported a family member or friend with a long term illness, mental health issue, disability or who has an alcohol or other drug issue).
Mental health problems are common. One in four people experiences some form of mental health problem - the most common being anxiety and depression…and it’s not only the person with the illness who is affected, it can also affect family and friends.
The definition of a young carer is a young person who supports a family member or friend with a long term illness, mental health issue, disability or who has an alcohol or other drug issue.
CEO of beyondblue: the national depression initiative, Ms Leonie Young says that recognising the reactions and emotions of young carers and providing support are vital in maintaining positive mental health.
“It’s important that carers of friends or family with a mental health problem are acknowledged and supported. This online competition is a fantastic way to recognise young carers in our communities. It’s important to remember the key messages for young people LOOK, LISTEN, TALK and SEEK HELP together and that help is always available - you are not alone.”
This competition is a partnership between Carers Australia and the Inspire Foundation (who host the Reach Out website.)
You can win one of 6 $250 JB Hi-Fi vouchers. All you need to do is answer in 25 words or less, if you had 5 minutes with a politician, what would you tell them about the needs of young carers?
